Location: Ingham County, Michigan
The Problem: Children are being exposed to secondhand smoke, and tobacco use is very common in public housing.
Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge Approach: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is proposing to ban lit tobacco products from all public housing living units. The Ingham County Home Initiative is committed to increasing health opportunities among families living in HUD-funded houses. The group will work with HUD-funded multi-unit residents and property management staff to implement an effective smoke-free policy. During this process, the project partners will host a series of on-site feedback sessions on the smoke-free policy and will offer smoking cessation services and support. The goal is to reduce tobacco use and the number of children exposed to secondhand smoke in these HUD-funded living spaces.
