Location: Independence, Missouri, population 117,240
The Problem: Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death within the United States and is responsible for approximately 480,000 deaths per year. Approximately 50,000 non-smokers die each year due to unintended tobacco exposure.
Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge Approach: The Independence Health Department is working to improve the health of their community by reducing unintended exposure to secondhand and thirdhand smoke in multi-unit housing. In addition to monitoring demographics and health behaviors, surveys will be distributed through this project to gather data pertaining to housing demographics, tobacco history, secondhand smoke exposure and landlord/property manager and tenant’s perception, knowledge and readiness.
