Healthy Beverage Zone Project

Location: Bronx County, New York, population 1.455 million

The Problem: Rates of obesity and obesity-related chronic diseases in the South Bronx are among the highest in New York state.

Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge Approach: To address obesity, "iHeal" formed the Healthy Beverage Zone project to reduce the proportion of community members who drink one or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day, which are major contributors to weight gain. The project will affect the current policies, systems, and environment of worksites (e.g. health care and educational services) throughout the South Bronx to improve healthy beverage intake.
